What Defines a Culture?
Fundamental characteristics of a culture can be found over distances that do not end on the border of a state of a country. Colin Woodard lays out a theory that North Americans can be categorized into 11 regional cultures (“American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America”).
These characteristics contribute to a strong unity on social and political issues within each group. So "Midlanders" might tend to dismiss government intervention and value pluralism, while residents of "Tidewater" are inclined to respect authority and tradition.
